The J. Paul Getty Museum announced today the acquisition of two new works: Landscape with the Temptation of Saint Anthony

The J. Paul Getty Museum announced today the acquisition of two new works: Landscape with the Temptation of Saint Anthony (1617) by 17th-century Flemish landscape and still-life painter Roelandt Savery (1576-1639) and a brown wash and graphite drawing entitled Sphinx (c. 1898-1900) by renowned 19th-century French sculptor and draftsman Auguste Rodin (1840-1917).

Savery's Landscape is one of the most important works by the artist to become available in several decades, and will go on in Winter 2009 in the Museum's East Pavilion, alongside Hans Hoffmann's A Hare in the Forest (about 1585) and in close proximity to Jan Brueghel's Entry of the Animals into Noah's Ark (1613) and later Dutch landscape paintings. Rodin's Sphinx will not be on permanent view because of the light sensitivity of the material, but will temporarily go on view December 16, 2998 alongside two complementary drawings from the collection: Edgar Degas' Miss Lala at the Fernando Circus and Paul Gauguin's Eve ('The Nightmare').

New Artistic Director of the documenta 13

Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev has been elected the Artistic Director of the documenta 13, which is scheduled to take place from June 9th, 2012 to September 16th, 2012 in Kassel.

Bernd Leifeld, CEO of documenta und Museum Fridericianum Veranstaltungs-GmbH announced today (03.12.2008) that in an unanimous decision the Supervisory Board of documenta followed the proposal of the international finding committee.

Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev works as a curator and writer in Rome, Turin and New York. She is currently the Chief Curator at the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art in Turin and was the Artistic Director for the 16th Sydney Biennale (2008). From 1999 to 2001 she was Senior Curator of Exhibitions at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center – a MoMA Affiliate. Previously, she organized exhibitions as an independent curator in different countries.

Museum of Islamic Art opens December 1 in Qatar in Iconic I.M. PEI

The Museum of Islamic Art, a new cultural icon for the Gulf region, will open its doors to the public on December 1, 2008. Dedicated to reflecting the full vitality, complexity and diversity of the arts of the Islamic world, the Museum of Islamic Art will collect, preserve, study and exhibit masterpieces spanning three continents from the 7th to the 19th century.

Under the leadership of Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Chairperson of the Qatar Museums Authority’s Board of Trustees, the Museum of Islamic Art will be a new international centre for learning and creativity that advances the cultural vision of the State of Qatar.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M. Pei, the 376,740-square-foot Museum of Islamic Art rises from the sea, in Doha Bay in the Arabian Gulf and houses a collection of international masterpieces in galleries encircling a soaring, five-storey-high domed atrium.

National Museum of American History Will Open Nov. 21

Star-Spangled Banner Gallery, White House Copy of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address Are Highlights of Opening Year Exhibitions

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History will open its doors to the public Friday, Nov. 21, providing a new look at the almost 200-year-old Star-Spangled Banner and a rare chance to see the White House copy of President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. The reopening will mark the completion of a two-year, $85 million renovation of the building’s center core, dramatically transforming the museum’s architectural appeal while reorganizing and renewing the presentation of its extensive collections.

Visitors will enter a dramatic five-story sky-lit atrium, surrounded by artifact displays filled with more than 400 objects showcasing the breadth and depth of the museum’s three million objects representing the cultural, social, technological and political history of the United States. An architectural representation of a waving flag—960 reflective tiles made of polycarbonate material—frames the entrance to the Star-Spangled Banner gallery. The gallery itself is a climate-controlled state-of-the-art chamber designed to evoke the “dawn’s early light.” An exhibition that includes multimedia displays and historic objects will tell the story of the flag and the National Anthem.
